Royal Rosarians, Marquis Companies Name Tessie Taylor of Northeast Portland the 2009 Rose Queen Rose Queen Tea Event Attracts More Than 450 Guests

Tessie Taylor of northeast Portland graciously accepted her sash and crown as she was named the 2009 Rose Queen yesterday on the eve of the Rose Festival in Portland. Marquis Companies provide skilled nursing, long-term care and assisted living services to residents throughout its 26 facilities in Oregon, California, Montana, Idaho and Nevada.

Marquis’ Rose Queen Tea event celebrates the lives of senior ladies who currently make their home in a Marquis facility. Twenty-three remarkable senior ladies from various Marquis facilities were recognized for their volunteer and community service contributions.

The Royal Rosarians chose Tessie Taylor because of her dedication to children and her community. Doctors call Tessie a “miracle patient” after medically dying three times last year from heart failure and having to be resuscitated; persevering through with no brain damage. However, Tessie is accustomed to hard circumstances. On May 9, 1921 Tessie was born, of all places, in a boxcar where she lived for three months while her father worked with the railway. Tessie now makes her residence at Vintage Suites at Piedmont in Portland where she gives any child who visits a new teddy bear wrapped in a homemade blanket. She says, “It makes me happy to make others happy.” Tessie Taylor is a resident at Marquis’ Vintage Suites at Piedmont facility in northeast Portland.

The 2002 Miss America and Oregon native Katie Harman hosted the event during which each Rose Queen was escorted on stage by a friend or family member to have their life story told to the audience of 450.
