Skilled Nursing Resident Attends NASCAR Weekend to see Earnhardt Jr. Drive For the First Time Marquis Care Resident, Michael Kelly, Heading to the Races and Fulfilling a Lifelong Dream 36 Years in the Making

On Feb. 26th, Marquis Skilled Nursing resident, Michael Kelly, will watch as NASCAR racers compete at the Las Vegas Speedway in the qualifying rounds of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.  The event, facilitated by Marquis Care at Plaza Regency, part of Marquis Companies, a skilled nursing, assisted living and home health care company, and its New Chapters Program will start at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 26th. The New Chapters Program at Marquis encourages employees to listen to the dreams and hopes of residents and then work towards the realization of these, often life-long, aspirations.

Rolling With the Punches
Michael Kelly was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy 36 years ago at the young age of 12.  An active teenager, Michael loved playing baseball, riding bikes, camping and fishing; however the advancement of his debilitating disease forced him to rely on the use of a wheelchair and portable ventilator to aid in mobility and respiratory support.  Although his medical condition can prove challenging, Michael has stayed positive and can be seen zipping around his home with a zest for life.  No sooner guests and residents are greeted by Michael’s ever-present smile, they are met with the back of his wheelchair decorated with a #88 racing sticker, the car number of his favorite driver Dale Earnhardt Jr.  Soon after being diagnosed, Mike became a big fan of Dale Ernhardt Sr. and now cheers for his son Dale Jr.

Off to the Races
On Feb. 26th, Michael will be escorted by his brother-in-law Mike, and members of the Marquis Care at Plaza Regency staff for his first NASCAR race. The group will be watching as the drivers warm up and race in the qualifying heats from the Dale Earnhardt terrace.  Mike and his brother-in-law will then be treated to dinner and a beer or two following a day that is sure to be a milestone in the life of this NASCAR fan.
