SKILLED NURSING RESIDENT FULFILLS LIFELONG CULINARY DREAM ON NOVEMBER 5, 2009 Marquis Care Resident, Laura Jaques, to Get a Taste of Cuisine at Oregon Culinary Institute

Nov. 2, 2009 – On November 5TH, Marquis Skilled Nursing resident, Laura Jaques, will fulfill a dream 85 years in the making as she enters through the doors of the Oregon Culinary School in South West Portland, Ore.  The event facilitated through administrators at Marquis, a skilled nursing, assisted living and home health care company, and its New Chapters Program will start at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 5th. Marquis created the New Chapters Program to help senior citizens realize their lifelong dreams.

A Long-Standing Passion for Cooking
Laura grew up in a household with plenty of love, but like many others, money was short.  To nurture her passion for the culinary arts and nutrition Laura would spend hours in the public library, flipping through every book in the cooking section.

“I didn’t have the money to go to school in those days, but I sure could go to the library,” recalled Laura. “So I went all the time to check out cookbooks but I never got to fulfill my dream of being in a real culinary school.”

Another obstacle Laura faced growing up was the low number of women pursuing degrees beyond high school.  Now that she is a little older, and much wiser, she is ready to finally put on the chefs coat and toque that she has dreamed of.

A Bon Appétit Bombshell
On November 5, Laura’s four daughters will meet her at the Marquis Care at Centennial facility in South East Portland for a day to remember.  Laura is still unaware that this will be the day when her dreams of entering culinary school will come true, as the Marquis staff decided to make it a complete surprise.  Because Laura is in a wheelchair, her family and staff will be transported via van to Oregon Culinary Institute (OCI).  After arriving, an OCI staffer, also mobile by wheelchair, will tour Laura through the facility taking in the sounds and of course smells of the large, state of the art culinary school.  Finally, Laura will be lead into the 70-person dining room where a large group of friends and family will be waiting to join her for a four-course, gourmet lunch.  Here, Laura will be presented with an honorary degree from the University and title of Chef de Cuisine.
