MARQUIS COMPANIES HONORS RESIDENT FOR OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENTS AND COMMUNITY DEDICATION WITH THE FACILITY’S FIRST CITIZENSHIP TREE PLANTING Community Savior, Betsy Ross, to Be Honored by Marquis Care at Hope Village November 12 with the Planting of a Citizenship Tree in Her Name

Nov. 3, 2009—The plaque above 77-year-old Betsy Ross’ bed at Marquis Care at Hope Village in Canby, Ore. rings true to her character: “In the deepest part of our souls, most of us want to make a difference with our lives. We want to do something positive that will live on after we’re gone.” In honor of Betsy’s achievements and dedication to the community, Marquis Companies, a skilled nursing, assisted living and home health care company, will plant its first Citizenship Tree in Betsy’s name on Thursday, November 12.

Betsy Ross has been a long time resident of the community of Canby. During her retired years, she wanted to be an active person and chose to be involved in her local community. Betsy began her involvement in 1983 and is still an active member of the Marquis Hope Village community.

Throughout her life, Betsy became a person who genuinely enjoys helping others. When her doctor deemed her disabled with a mobility disorder she did not want to sit around, but instead wanted to stay busy helping the Canby community.

After volunteering at her church, Betsy began helping at the Canby Public Library and the Canby Adult Center. In 1990 Betsy joined the Canby Adult Center as a volunteer; she wanted the best for the seniors in the community. She started volunteering for Loaves and Fishes (Meals on Wheels) as a driver, delivering good, nutritional food to local seniors. Betsy then became the Coordinator, and later, the Treasurer. Betsy became well known as the woman who cared enough to be the voice for the less fortunate. She put in many long hours and never complained. Under her care, local seniors never missed a meal.

Betsy volunteered at a variety of organizations throughout Canby and Clackamas County, receiving many awards and honors, such as the Hall of Honor through the Canby Chamber of Commerce and the City of Canby. In addition, she was nominated by the Canby area as a winner for the Time to Care award by KPTV in 1989. Organizations fortunate to have Betsy on-board include:
· Canby Chamber of Commerce
· Zenith Women’s Club of Canby
· Canby Elementary School
· Canby Public Library
· Clackamas Hospice
· Kiwanis
· Canby Adult Center
· Canby Art Association—Canby General Days
· Transitional Shelter—Aurora Presbyterian
· Dare to Care Prevention Team
· Gospel Harmony Festival

Betsy, now a resident of Marquis Care at Hope Village, continues her community service by greeting and welcoming new people and in acting as the President of Resident Council. Betsy lives her life as a spokesperson for the soft-spoken needs of others, using each day as an opportunity to help another resident, friend or family member.
